Teacher Wellbeing: The Key to Unlocking Students' Emotional Growth

Students' Emotional Well-Being is as important as any adult's mental & emotional concerns in today’s time. Hence, parents, teachers, and peers are also considered major factors in their emotional growth quotient. The power a teacher or educator holds over a student has always been a remarkable influence that one could make every day with every individual.

Evolution of a Teacher’s Role Through Time

In the olden times, teachers were gurus who taught the path of life to their pupils in order to teach them how to efficiently manage their desires and morals. Furthermore, the change in the education system leads to a change in dealing with students' needs. Before the 21st century, teachers were expected to go out of their way to make a difference by nurturing a child in every possible way. Whereas in today's time, a teacher simply needs to nurture the being of the student. This is where the Teacher Training Institute, like ABEA, helped me to feel equipped to handle classrooms of today.

The Importance of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

It’s a work in progress with constant efforts that help a student to excel on a personal, educational, emotional & professional front. Social & emotional learning is the key to unlocking a student's mind and creating a space where they can cherish themselves as they are.

The Teacher’s Emotional Impact on the Classroom

Today’s classroom is not just about students and their development but also about the contribution a teacher can make to their overall social and emotional learning. It is often said that what you sow is what grows. And so aptly, a teacher's emotional well-being and social interaction impact the classroom as well as institutions.

While emotions are an ecosystem, my teacher training institute helped me enhance my well-being, as that directly impacts the social and emotional behaviour of my students.

The Reciprocal Nature of Teacher–Student Emotions

We all learn from each other, and so do students. If the teacher’s emotions are valued, they will be able to reciprocate them to students. And all in all, the ecosystem of social and emotional learning of every individual is wired smoothly.

Let’s say, for example, an educator is upset or not delivering her class as she should. The external factors increase these different emotions, which eventually lead to emotional regulation of students. If this happens often, the emotional growth is blocked, and the ecosystem is disrupted.

Teachers and Students: Two Tracks Moving Together

In any case, two parties are like two tracks of a train that need to be equivalent to each other. Students are a clay, one of a kind that caters to them with positive and conscious efforts with respect to enhance their emotional growth. If a teacher mirrors her positive emotions to students while conducting a class, the same emotion is felt by the students. This is a good exercise to keep the cycle of social and emotional interaction intact.

Creating a Continuous Cycle of Emotional Growth

Once this cycle is contagious, the effect of it on every individual’s growth is a constant and uninterrupted emotional growth process. One of the best and current ways to do this is by conducting activities that lead to social and emotional learning of the students. Interactive classroom sessions are often a combination of interaction that taps your emotions and shapes your social skills. This enhances the emotional regulation of educators and students. As well as on the professional front, it encourages an educator to upgrade his or her learning skills to evoke a child’s emotional and social development.

Key Skills Educators Must Use Daily

Rapport building, empathy, and assertiveness are the keys that an educator can use in everyday sessions to boost the children’s confidence and self-confidence. A simple, everyday incident would be a window for a student to learn from their educator on how to manage their emotions in various social interactions. The mirror technique is the best way to learn from your adults and achieve the skills they have or wish to have.

Impact of Emotionally Aware Educators on Students

This kind of approach creates a difference in every student, and their anxious or different emotions are swiftly addressed. When a teacher seems positive and confident, the same energetic behaviour is adopted by the students, which later leads to positive growth of their emotions socially and emotionally.

Institutional Responsibility Toward Teacher Well-Being

A regular emotional checklist of educators would positively impact a child’s emotional well-being. A change in professional setting for educators will surely impact the way they address students.

Conclusion:

If any delays at work, leaves, or extension for a project have been observed at the educator's end, then it’s the institution's responsibility to address it assertively but with empathy. The same attitude will be expressed by the educators to the students. The ecosystem is healthy when all the aspects are on the same page.
